            <description>In this talk we describe a thorough data analysis that looks into the rare and sparkling elements of OSM.
Rare information such as local or topic specific tags are one of the pillars of success of our project that keep users interested and make the map colourful. We analyse how often different map edits are made to the database and find out if rare edits are linked to specific users or if the work to colour the map is equally distributed. In addition a [website](https://ideal-vgi.geog.uni-heidelberg.de/unicorn/) is launched that enables users in Germany and Poland to compare their personal tendency to map rare object in relation to the local community. The talk is accompanied by a [manuscript](https://gitlab.gistools.geog.uni-heidelberg.de/giscience/ideal-vgi/osm-unicorn-factor) that transparently shows all steps of the presentation as well as the full source code under an open license.</description>

            <description>Since its Lisbon premiere in April 2022, I&#x27;ve given thirty-some performances of A Synesthete&#x27;s Atlas–during which I manipulate projected digital maps in collaboration with improvising musicians–across North America. My Carto-OSC began life as a rapid prototyping tool for designing web maps but morphed into the platform I use for real time cartography and video creation. February 2024 found my single-channel work, If Map #5, appearing on the eight story high display that crowns San Francisco&#x27;s Salesforce Tower, the second tallest building west of the Mississippi River. A series of performances within and beyond the Tower&#x27;s viewshed were held between February and April.

I&#x27;ll talk about my influences, the crowdsourced data and open source technologies I use, the challenges of designing for a determinedly low resolution yet enormous, wraparound display, and the joys of collaborating with musicians/sound designers using a wide variety of instrumentation.</description>

            <description>As this year&#x27;s SoTM is being held on the 20th anniversary of the founding of OSM, I decided to introduce the beginnings of the development of OSM in Poland, as well as the beginnings of the OpenStreetMap Poland Association, which was founded in a lecture room at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Lodz Univ. of Technology - a few hundred metres from the SoTM venue. 
I try to explain what the beginnings of OSM mapping in Poland looked like - the times when we mapped almost exclusively on the basis of our own GPS tracks and handwritten terrain notes, the times when the first Bing orthophotomap appeared, which did not cover the eastern part of Poland, the history of cooperation with UMP - a local map project competing with OSM, the effect of the transition from the CC By SA 2.0 licence to ObDL and some other interesting facts from those pioneering times.

I will also describe the beginnings of OSM Polska Association&#x27;s activity - cooperation with state institutions, the first projects and competitions, as well as the crisis that occurred after the first 5 years of operation.</description>

            <description>In the rapidly evolving world of OpenStreetMap, ensuring the completeness and quality of pedestrian map data is crucial for a wide range of applications, from urban planning to accessibility improvements.

The governmental organization (AMAT), local OpenStreetMap communities (Wikimedia Italia and PoliMappers), and the companies (Meta and TomTom) have collaborated to streamline the improvement and quality checks of pedestrian map data on OpenStreetMap for Milan, Italy.
This collaboration aimed to complete and maintain the pedestrian map data infrastructure on OpenStreetMap in the working area. Collaborative and innovative approaches included automating crosswalk detection from high-resolution imagery, introducing pedestrian map data quality checks, and streamlining quality checks with MapRoulette and the active local community to address data improvement and quality issues. Our work has made Milan one of the most complete cities in Europe in terms of pedestrian map data infrastructure.


In this talk, we will share the most common data issues found in pedestrian map data, the methodology used to streamline data quality projects with MapRoulette challenges, strategies for improving missing data on OSM, community activation strategies, project outputs, and how to disseminate.</description>

            <description>Representation learning has been proven as a very capable approach in many domains of artificial intelligence like Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computer Vision (CV) or Network Science (NS). Representation learning of spatial and geographic data is a rapidly developing field that allows for similarity detection between areas and high-quality inference using deep neural networks. Existing approaches concentrate on embedding raster imagery (maps, street or satellite photos), mobility data or road networks. We propose methods for learning vector representations of OpenStreetMap regions concerning urban functions, land use, POI location and road network with additional features. We also propose an approach to include public transport availability in the representation learning approach. We have designed our representation learning methods operating on various types of OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, one of the largest open databases with structured geospatial data. All our methods operate on the hexagonal grid from Uber&#x27;s H3 spatial index to increase reproducibility. We presented our results at different workshops accompanying the SIGSPATIAL conference.</description>

            <description>In our presentation, we will present attempts to work with materials relating to various elements of the geographical environment in the OSM world. Being aware of the limitations that the tag system may impose, we tried to achieve the best possible results of our work. We collected information on the edge of the Arctic - in the village of St. Nicholas near Rovaniemi, in Croatian Dalmatia on the Peljesac peninsula, on a half-kilometer section of the Moldavian Danube, as well as in the Polish Bieszczady and Beskid mountains, and on the Masurian lakes. Field work is still ongoing, as is the OSM update. However, we already have a lot of thoughts. We are sure that OSM can be supplemented with information that would allow the creation of basic thematic maps used in physical geography, e.g. geomorphological or hydrological maps, or building maps #D in socio-economic geography and spatial management. Some maps, of course, require additional data, e.g. hypsometry , but this is definitely a good direction in providing a universal map for a specific, small area. Over time, an increasingly larger area of the globe will probably be filled with dense spatial information from OSM. And the ultimate goal is a somewhat lazy effort to collect all spatial data in one place.</description>

* Do mappers &quot;clue&quot; landuse polygons to roads (i.e. sharing nodes) or do polygons end in the ditch along the road?
* How many landuse polygons are mapped as multipolygons? How many of them could be remodeled as closed ways without loss of information?
* How old are landuse polygons?
* Can we spot &quot;one-tree forests&quot;, i.e. forest polygons modelling the crown of individual trees?
* What landuse classes overlap each other very often? How large is the overlap?
* Can we spot differences between countries mapped by craftmappers and countries where imports dominate?

Results will be presented on regional level (admin_level 6) to highlight regional differences within countries.

The talk will offer a hint if we as community should ban some mapping styles. It will not give any insights on the qualitative accurancy of landuse classification.</description>

            <description>The purpose of the study (in reference to the title) was to conduct an analysis of the set of address
points collected in the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database for the territory of Poland. In order to carry
out this study, it was necessary to create a suitable tool performing validation based on a comparison
of address data with the reference database of the State Register of Borders (PRG), maintained by
the General Oﬀice of Geodesy and Cartography.
The tool developed as part of the work, in the form of the osm_matcha application, analyzes
descriptive and spatial features of address data, such as town name, street, building number and
coordinates, and then compares them with analogous metadata from the PRG database. The
osm_matcha application makes as many address connections as possible between databases. Using a
sophisticated mechanism of processing techniques and matching even records containing errors and
differences due to the different genesis of the data, acts of vandalism or mistakes of those responsible
for collecting the data. All this treating the analyzed collection as Big Data.
The implementation of the application uses several different solutions. The data processing engine
is the SQL language along with the PostgreSQL database management system with the PostGIS
extension. The Python language and Docker software were used to standardize the process and
facilitate implementation by users, as well as a language for communicating with the database.
Analysis using the tool was aimed at improving the quality of address data in OSM through
systematic validation and comparison with reference data, as well as developing good practices in the
context of working with address data. The tool has the potential to assist the OSM editing community
in the process of improving data and providing users with a tool for analyzing address quality. This
is an important step in providing the community with a dedicated analysis tool and improving
the OpenStreetMap database, as well as developing cooperation between Warsaw University of
Technology and OpenStreetMap Poland.</description>

            <description>German municipalities are beginning to discover the potential of map-based citizen participation - sometimes, but not always using OpenStreetMap. However those projects remain in a very narrow focus: they either exclusively focus on problem reporting, on citizen input for specific planning processes, on citizen input about their general ideas and needs or on citizen information. These are all sensible use cases – but a holistic approach is rarely pursued.

Yet from a municipal perspective, map-based participation, this should matter: Because if a map offers added value from the citizen&#x27;s point of view, it becomes a lively place - where people come together with their thoughts, their data and their potential for participation. Administrations (and municipal companies) can make use of this: for contact with the population, for recording needs and ideas, for planning, for the joint development of new services and even operating models or for impact measurement. 

With these map-based projects, a well-known smart city problem is becoming apparent: several similar projects are being developed in parallel, which are implemented in different technical ways. Technical compatibility with related applications is not taken into account. Neither APIs nor common standards are being developed. There is no focus on the necessary common infrastructure.

At Agora Digitale Transformation, a German non-profit think tank, we are currently working with local authorities and civil society organizations on a vision of such a &quot;city map of the future&quot;. In June, we will publish a vision paper that lays out the concrete policy steps for this to become reality. With the SotM EU audience, we want to a) share our findings and experiences, b) discuss the EU-implications of such policy efforts and c) discuss how the OSM community could partake in this policy work.</description>

            <description>Why fAIr? The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) sees that mappers can, on average, map between 1000-1500 buildings per working day without AI assistance. During an AI-assisted mapping pilot (2019-2020) supported by Microsoft, 18 million building footprints were extracted from satellite imagery for all of Tanzania and Uganda. HOT discovered during this pilot that this average mapping nearly doubled to 2500-3000 buildings being added to OpenStreetMap (OSM) per day with the assistance of high-quality AI open-source datasets.

fAIr seeks to solve three foreseen problems:

1. AI models openness: AI-assisted mapping for humanitarian purposes feels like a black box. Useful open-source results coming from AI exists (e.g. META&#x27;s global roads dataset available in RapiD, Microsoft’s global buildings dataset and Google’s open building in Africa). However, the models (code/training data) are currently not open-source.
2. Model bias: Having model biases means predicting over satellite imagery would be biased toward the training dataset used to teach the AI model and the nature and quality of imagery is very different across the globe.
3. Lack of feedback: There is no enhancement applied easily on the intelligence and accuracy of the AI models and humans are out of the loop when building the AI models, this due to AI models being either closed source or were built once and made available to end users so enhancements would require repeating the process from scratch.

What is behind fAIr?

The deep learning model behind fAIr is based on RAMP (Replicable AI for MicroPlanning), whose architecture and approach originates from [an Eff-UNet model](https://rampml.global/ramp-model-card/).

The research presented in this talk, falls within the broader spectrum of research on understanding the fine tuning process for geographic domain adaptation in image analysis validation, in particular for building footprints detection.

The talk will describe the procedure put in place to perform a reproducible analysis of the performance of the ML model training, from the training datasets selection process, the more technical details of the backbone model underneath, the choice of the metrics used to measure accuracy, and finally the analysis of the results obtained testing for different metrics.</description>

In this talk, we will look at two projects. The &quot;Radverkehrsatlas&quot; focuses on bicycle data used to create bicycle network plans, which are the first step to building better infrastructure. The &quot;Parkraumatlas&quot; focuses on street-side parking and provides crucial data for discussions about spatial justice in public spaces. We will examine the extensive processing of OSM data necessary to make it easy to understand and use for public administration use cases. Additionally, we will discuss how we strengthen cooperation with public administrations to keep the data updated and relevant.</description>

            <description>I designed and developed the Mini-Mapathon curriculum to answer three key research questions below.	
				                                          
1.	How did the design support changes in students’ perceptions of their crisis mapping knowledge and skills? 
2.	How did participating in the Mini-Mapathon support student expressed interest in crisis mapping in the future?
3.	How did the Mini-Mapathon support students in engaging crisis mapping? 	
		
I designed and delivered the Mini-Mapathon, via three 45-minute Human Geography courses to 28 junior Asian high school students at an international school in Beijing, China.  The English Language Learners (ELL) student population were all Chinese and their ages ranged from 16-18, consisting of 15 male students and 13 female students.  Prior to implementing the research project with 28 Human Geography students, I researched the best way to teach crisis mapping to ELL students by participating in Mapathons and Mapalongs.  I piloted three crisis mapping Mini-Mapathons for 55 Asian 4th grade students in three classrooms after learning crisis mapping was done effectively with 10 year old students in Milan, Italy (Gaspari, et al., 2021). The pilot programs with 4th grade Asian students and subsequent project were implemented only after the 4th grade students learned about crises in their IB-PYP curriculum, and after I conducted an extensive literature review of this relatively new (2005), interdisciplinary and innovative field of crisis mapping, investigated many mapping software platforms, and spoke to representatives from www.ushahidi.org, www.hotosm.org , and www.missingmaps.com.   
A website was built (www.crisismapping.weebly.com) to turn the Mini-Mapathon experience into an exportable educational activity that could be replicated or delivered in formal and informal learning environments. 
Using the ADDIE approach, I sought to design, implement, and evaluate a Mini-Mapathon curriculum to answer my three research questions.  I implemented my applied research project on teaching crisis mapping through a Mini-Mapathon and collected pre and post surveys in late April, 2022, during the spring semester at an international high school in my three Human Geography classes.  Twenty-eight Asian students participated in the Mini-Mapathon so that medicine and services could be delivered to vulnerable populations in Nigeria and Zimbabwe by Doctors Without Borders and The Red Cross.  During the 45 minute Mini-Mapathons, students were taught how to map buildings and roads using Humanitarian Open Street Mapping software via www.hotosm.org and they took pre and post surveys so that I could better understand and measure how students learn during Mapathons and determine if my methodology for teaching crisis mapping was effective (Branch, 2009).  	

The learning objectives of the Mini-Mapathon design were as follows: 
1)	Students will be able to co-create interactive open street maps using geo-spatial software. 
2)	Students will be able to analyze the role maps play in crisis response such as refugee crises and disasters and identify the stakeholders including citizens, international humanitarian organizations such as UNHCR, Doctors Without Borders, and Red Cross, NGO’s, government agencies, and military branches.
3)	Students will be able to develop geographical knowledge and spatial awareness.  	
I delivered pre and post surveys to better understand how students learn, what they learn, and assess the quality of crisis mapping instruction in my three Human Geography courses with 28 Asian high school students.  How to Create an Account tutorial along with the other static and video tutorials can now be found on the website I built www.crisismapping.weebly.com.                         								
I began each class with a 2–3-minute video focusing on the problem, population in need and showcasing the work of the Spanish Red Cross, UNHCR, or Doctors Without Borders, to increase cultural and historical context and show the organization who can operationalize our map to provide relief to those in need.  I then proceeded to explain that some places do not have accurate maps because they do not have Google cars driving around or adequate resources in the government to make up to date maps, however, volunteers like us can make the new maps together using satellite imagery.  I asked the students to create their own OSM accounts in previous classes because we had been using the OpenStreetMap resource to explore chokepoints, or straights and canals, to better understand geography and global trade in previous lessons.  I provided anonymous usernames and passwords if students had not yet created their OSM accounts to save time.  Some opted to use the Tutorial How to Create An OSM Account and some students taught others how to create an account quickly. 			
				
Next, I proceeded to implement the following step by step in class instructions in order to make learning visible and meet the academic language needs of the ELL students (Hattie, 2008; Yoder, et al., 2016).  
Step 1) Watch a fellow student map in front of the classroom following the teacher instruction through a four-step tutorial How To Map A Building. The tutorial can be found on www.crisismapping.weebly.com 
Step 2) Review the four-step process by coaching the student verbally through the four-step tutorial How to Map a Building. 
Step 3) Correct the teacher’s mistakes of not following the order and incorrectly mapping the building size, and mapping a shadow. 
Step 4) Answer any questions students may have. 
Step 5) Ask students to start mapping their first building and raise their hands before saving and uploading their work so the teacher or aid can inspect and correct their work if needed.   

PDF and video tutorials on How to Map a Building and How to Map a Road were delivered through the school’s information communication technology platform so students could learn at their own pace through multi-modal scaffolded instruction.											
The population sample of 28 Asian ELL high school junior students completed pre-surveys prior to the learning intervention or Mapathon and then completed the post survey.  The pre and post survey questions were a mix of qualitative and quantitative questions (see Table 3).  The quantitative survey data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel. The descriptive analysis was performed with SPSS to find the frequencies, percentages, the mean and standard deviation of survey question data. The descriptive statistics are presented below in the form of tables, graphs, and charts below.											
I used descriptive statistics and analysis instead of inferential statistics because this was a pilot project with a small sample size.  The goal was to understand the impact of the new curriculum on this particular population and not to generalize effects of an intervention for all similar students.</description>

            <description>We have been publishing maps for years. Around 2010, we recognized that the availability of current sources was now complete thanks to the web and geographic databases. However, the Big Data problem has grown the cost of data analysis, and at the same time the quality of free, scalable online maps has increased dramatically, making commercial paper maps unattractive. As a result, expenditure on map printing decreased, many titles disappeared, and many cartographic publishing houses were closed.

We did not want to give up creating maps, because in some situations classic maps have still an advantage over scalable geoportals. So, we have created the ability to automatically create maps on a large scale, with minimal human intervention.

In the customization process, the user has the opportunity to: determine the geographical scope, scale and paper size. In the next steps, one selects the theme and density of content, composition, manner and other graphic aspects. OSM data is downloaded from the Postgre database, the complex process performs editing, generalization, inserts the grid, legend and other elements of the composition, and modifies the colors. As a result, the user receives high-quality file – methodologically correct as much as possible – that can be used in a variety of ways.

The effectiveness of the developed process depends, among others, on how OSM data features such as geometry, keys and tags are used. Examples show the benefits of this data and the problems to be solved.</description>

            <summary>Making Notes: How Every Door Replaces Walking Papers</summary>
            <description>Every Door is not just a map editor: it&#x27;s an ultimate tool for surveying. Before version 5.0 it focused on cities: missing shops, addresses, micromapping. With the coming Summer, when the urge to leave a city for a bicycle trip is high, I saw to improve Every Door to make it an outdoor surveying tool as well.

All this doesn&#x27;t come from nowhere. Every Door is based on my 14 year experience is various kids of surveying. I started with walking papers that I drew by hand — and before ED, used at every mapping party. Walking papers are still popular in areas with unstable internet connection. But most importantly, walking papers change how we approach a map. They show us how the control on maps is commodialized, by allowing us to make physical, tangible, permanent maps ourselves.

In a way that feeling is what Every Door tries to replicate: not of using JOSM or StreetComplete to survey, but of having power. You put your finger to the screen and feel the map changing. It was important not to lose this feeling while translating the walking paper experience to an app. in this talk, we&#x27;ll look into a few things that enable it.</description>

            <summary>Learnings from developing Microsoft’s Map builder UX</summary>
            <description>I have worked as interim maintainer of iD editor and on Microsoft&#x27;s Map builder osm editor for 3y with focus on frontend and with excitement I plan to share openly with you learnings from developing the user interface for the experiment project that is Map builder.

The key challenge product’s UI is trying to solve is how to onboard users with no prior mapping experience to the world of osm editing, provide further education, and develop them into regular contributors.

In order to solve this challenge, product is built around the ideas of: keeping UI simple and minimal, educating and onboarding user through paradigm ‘learn by doing’, implementing step-by-step streamlined drawing and editing tools, keeping the sentiment of mapping fun and finally emphasizing that map making is performed with and for a community.

If you have a passion for Frontend, good UI patterns, you are interested in thought process of how to build visuals for an osm editor, then I invite you to join me while I further explore Map builder’s UI principals, share with you interesting design tradeoffs and key decisions that moved the product forward. 

This is more than a presentation; this is also an honest invitation to brainstorm and discuss how to make map making effective and fun.
